Siam: The Land of Smiles 🚴‍♀️😄

hermankasper

Thailand, formerly known as Siam, proudly carries the nickname "The Land of Smiles."It's easy to see why. Everywhere we go, we're greeted by radiant faces, but what many people don't realize is that behind those smiles lies a complex language. During our sponsored ride for Bike4Kids, we had the chance to experience this fascinating cultural phenomenon up close – and, honestly, it often gave us food for thought.

Donate: with €5 per kilometer, you help us achieve our goals. Every kilometer, quite literally, makes a difference.

The Thai Smile – More Than Just Happiness

Did you think a smile in Thailand always means friendliness? Think again! In this culture, the smile is an all-encompassing communication tool. It can, of course, express kindness or happiness but also conceal discomfort, embarrassment, or even anger.

Once, we were cycling on a busy highway when a driver passed us, smiling so broadly it seemed she was auditioning for a toothpaste commercial.

At a guesthouse, the receptionist greeted us with the same wide smile, which felt like genuine connection, as if we were truly welcome. And the truck driver who cheerfully smiled at us while we were waiting at a stoplight? No idea what he was thinking, but we smiled back just as brightly.

Smiling here is universal.

Thai People – Small in Stature, Big on Care

During our journey, we not only encountered the smile but also the efficiency of the Thai healthcare system. Thai people are generally smaller than us Dutch folks, which presents its own challenges. When I hit my head on a low-hanging beam, I ended up with a spectacular-looking cut (read: lots of blood).

Not even a minute later, two ambulances and six paramedics were by my side. In no time, I was at the emergency room, the wound was stitched up, and I was given injections and medication. The care was fast, professional – and almost delivered with a smile. Now the wound has healed, leaving nothing but a good story behind.

Your Support Moves Us

We’re receiving more and more reactions to our blogs – over 100 comments already! It’s heartwarming to see how many people are rooting for us. Those positive words, messages of encouragement, and likes give us the energy to keep pedaling. It’s amazing to know we’re not only riding for a good cause but also backed by a whole community.

Years of the Thai Child Development Foundation

On December 21st, the Thai Child Development Foundation (TCDF) celebrated its 20th anniversary. What started as a dream by Roos Tieges has now grown into an organization that has helped thousands of children. With healthcare for 1,900 children and education for 3,700 kids in Thailand, the impact is immense.

We’re proud to contribute to this great cause with our 3,500-kilometer sponsored ride. With 1,000 kilometers left, we’re pedaling steadily towards the finish line. But we need your help to reach our financial goal too.

Donate €5 per kilometer and help us make a difference.

Together, we can ensure that children in Thailand get the chance at a brighter future. Every smile we encounter on the road is a reminder of why we’re doing this.

Thank you all for your support! ❤️
